Making Reclamation Our Proclamation: How Communities of Color Can Reclaim Calm and Wellness in 2024

By Yolande Clark-Jackson

As we approach an election year in the midst of international unrest and daily updates of genocide, it’s very difficult to stay positive and think of individual goals or resolutions. Communities of color face unique challenges and systemic barriers that affect our overall sense of calm and wellness. And the constant hot takes on social media platforms intended to inform, do not often lend to a sense of calm. They often lead to heightened feelings of frustration and anger. We can’t wait for Mind-Body Wellness Day at the start of the year, we need a mind-body wellness strategy we can rely on all year long.

Witnessing countless examples of racism and violence against people of color with an unclear path on the best way to advocate for equality and justice for all can be exhausting.

These feelings of constant frustration disrupts our nervous system and can lead to anxiety. Yet, the first month of the year gives us an opportunity to reset our minds, bodies, and spirits. It also gives us the opportunity to face the reality of what is in our realm of control. Despite the external challenges we may face, individually or in our communities, it's important to recognize that we have the power to reclaim our sense of peace and well-being. With a clear mind, we are better equipped to care for ourselves and others.

One thing we can do today is commit to helping empower our communities by supporting and advocating for our joy, inner peace and well-being.

Here are a list of practical strategies and tips to help you navigate 2024 with an improved sense of calm and overall well being:

Acknowledge and Validate Feelings

Communities of color often experience heightened levels of stress, anxiety, and trauma due to systemic racism and discrimination. It is important to acknowledge and validate these feelings to cope with racial trauma. Create safe spaces within our community where individuals can share their experiences and feelings without judgment. By recognizing and discussing these emotions, healing and growth can begin.

Cultivate Cultural and Community Connection

By celebrating and embracing our cultural heritage and community connections, we not only foster pride in our heritage, but we also empower ourselves and others to navigate challenges with resilience and strength. Engage in activities and practices that honor traditions, values, and ancestral wisdom. Connect with elders and listen to their stories to validate their experience and contributions. Seek support from community organizations, attend cultural events, and join social networks that uplift and provide a sense of belonging.

Prioritize Mental Health and Self-Care

Unfortunately, in communities of color, mental health is often stigmatized and overlooked. It’s vital to prioritize mental well-being and seek professional help when needed. Encourage community members to access mental health resources and support services that are culturally affirming and understanding. Additionally, emphasize the importance of self-care practices, such as meditation, journaling, engaging in hobbies, or seeking therapy, to promote emotional healing and resilience.

Establish Healthy Habits

Cultivating healthy habits is essential for overall well-being. Focus on nourishing your body with nutritious foods, staying hydrated, and getting enough sleep. Implement an exercise routine that suits your preferences, whether it's yoga, running, or dancing. Regular physical activity releases endorphins, which can uplift your mood and reduce stress. Share your knowledge and health resources with friends and family to support their health journey as well.

Limit Media Consumption

Constantly consuming negative news and social media can significantly impact our mental well-being. Take control of what you expose yourself to and limit your media consumption. Choose trusted news sources and set boundaries on the time you spend on social media. Instead, redirect your focus toward discovering positive and uplifting content that enriches your mind.

Build Solidarity and Support Networks

Facing adversity can feel isolating, but building solidarity and support networks can provide strength. Connect with individuals and organizations that share your experiences and values. Participate in community-building activities, support local businesses, and collaborate on initiatives that uplift and empower communities of color. Together, we can create a more resilient and supportive environment for all.
