The Importance of Collective and Communal Care for LGBTQIA Community

In today's society, it’s crucial to recognize the unique challenges faced by LGBTQIA individuals and the importance of providing them with collective and communal care. They often face feelings of isolation and are at a greater risk of violence and suicide, especially among youth.

The statistics related to violence and suicide within the LGBTQIA community are sobering. According to a report by The Trevor Project, 37% of gay or lesbian youth seriously considered suicide, and 19% attempted. This is a stark contrast to straight youth, among whom 14% seriously considered suicide and 6% attempted it. The same report highlights that these risk disparities among bi youth remain consistent across gender identity and race/ethnicity. Additionally, the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report states that there is a need to examine trends in violence victimization and suicide risk for LGB youths across time, as few studies have explored the prevalence of violence victimization and suicide risk among this demographic.

These alarming statistics underscore the urgent need for increased support and resources for the LGBTQIA community to address the unique challenges they face, particularly related to mental health and safety.

The LGBTQIA community needs community

Because LGBTQIA individuals often face discrimination, stigma, and marginalization, leading to increased rates of mental health issues and isolation, they need community and support. Thankfully, organizations like The Human Rights Campaign are helping to address the needs of this community directly. But through collective and communal care, each of us can play a vital role in addressing these challenges. As a community, we can provide a supportive environment where individuals can feel valued and supported. Affirmative therapy, in particular, focuses on understanding and validating the experiences of LGBTQIA individuals, helping them navigate the complexities of their identities and building resilience.

Barriers to collective and communal care for LGBTQIA individuals

Despite the benefits of collective and communal care, many LGBTQIA individuals still face barriers to accessing support. These barriers include social and economic inequality, lack of resources, and inadequate awareness of the specific needs of LGBTQIA individuals. Affirmative therapy can help break down these barriers by providing a safe space for individuals to address their mental health concerns and work through challenges related to their identities.

How to create a supportive and inclusive community

Building a supportive and inclusive community for LGBTQIA individuals requires a collective effort from both individuals and institutions. Affirmative therapy can play a critical role in this process by empowering individuals to embrace their identities, fostering self-acceptance, and promoting mental well-being. Through community initiatives, support groups, and advocacy efforts, we can work towards creating a more welcoming environment for LGBTQIA individuals to thrive.

As a community, we can reduce the risks and isolation felt by committing to activities and initiatives that can build a more supportive and inclusive community, such as creating safe spaces, organizing community events, building networks and helping strengthen and expand support systems.

The need for collective and communal care for the LGBTQIA community cannot be overstated. By integrating affirmative therapy into our support systems and actively working towards a more inclusive society, we can help LGBTQIA individuals feel seen, heard, and valued.

At Ibisanmi Relational Health, we want to advocate for the rights and well-being of LGBTQIA individuals and strive to build a community where everyone can live authentically and with pride.
