Overcoming Pessimism and Anxiety: Healing from PTSD in Black and Brown Communities

Overcoming Pessimism and Anxiety: Healing from PTSD in Black and Brown Communities

BY YOLANDE CLARK-JACKSON

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a public health issue that can have a profound impact on individuals, especially in Black and Brown communities where the prevalence of trauma is often higher. This can lead to feelings of pessimism, anxiety about the future, and a deep-rooted fear that things will never improve. However, it is essential to understand that healing is possible, and seeking a culturally affirming therapist can be a crucial step in the recovery process.

Studies show Black Americans experience higher rates of PTSD compared to White Americans. This can be attributed higher exposure to traumatic events such as violence, discrimination, and socio-economic challenges.

A 2014 study published in JAMA Psychiatry found that approximately 8.7% of Black Americans will experience PTSD at some point in their lives, compared to 7.4% of White Americans.

The Pessimism and Anxiety Dilemma

In communities of color, those facing PTSD may struggle with a sense of hopelessness and despair due to past traumas. Structural racism and the inheritance of generational trauma can contribute to a state of constant stress. And reliving or witnessing traumatic events can lead to pervasive anxiety and a belief that the future is predetermined by past experiences.

The Importance of Culturally Affirming Therapy

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), African Americans are 21% less likely than White European Americans to use mental health services. This disparity is partly due to factors such as lack of access to care, cultural stigma around mental health, and mistrust of medical institutions. Additionally, a study highlighted by the APA found that young adult Black individuals, especially those with higher levels of education, are less likely to seek mental health services than their White counterparts

When seeking therapy for PTSD, individuals in Black and Brown communities may benefit greatly from working with a culturally affirming therapist. Culturally affirming therapy acknowledges and respects the unique experiences, values, and perspectives of individuals from diverse backgrounds. This approach can help create a safe and supportive environment for healing and growth.

Breaking the Cycle

Moving away from the belief that seeking help is a sign of weakness is a big step toward healing Black and Brown communities. Through culturally affirming therapy, individuals can explore their trauma in a way that takes into account the cultural context in which it occurred. Therapists who are culturally competent can help clients navigate the intersections of race, ethnicity, and trauma, empowering them to address their past experiences and move forward with resilience and hope.

Strategies for Healing and Growth

Beyond therapy and counseling, those suffering with PTSD can also explore a variety of  strategies to aid in the journey towards growth and healing.

Self-Care Practices: Engaging in activities that promote mental and emotional well-being, such as mindfulness, exercise, and creative expression, can aid in the healing process.

Community and Support: Connecting with others who have shared experiences can foster a sense of belonging and understanding and alleviate feelings of isolation.

Education and Advocacy: Increasing awareness about mental health issues in Black and Brown communities can help reduce stigma and promote greater access to resources for those in need.
